I was literally dying to read “The Age of Miracles” by Karen Thompson Walker. The book is a New York Times Bestseller, and every book review I have read just has amazing things to say. I finally received the book as a digital loan from the library, and I have to say, the book was worth the wait!
“The Age of Miracles” is told from the perspective of a child named Julia, who is living in a time when the Earth’s rotation begins to slow, therefore increasing the length of the 24 hour day by minutes. The Slowing continues, with little consequences in the beginning, then much harsher consequences as the days and nights lengthen by hours, tens of hours.
In addition to the global changes, Julia is experiencing changes in her family dynamic, experiencing the woes of first love (you know, the kind where you sit close to each other on the bus and it means you’re in love), and experiencing the changes in friendships, how they come and go.
Here’s a short YouTube trailer that will give you a great overview of the book:
“The Age of Miracles” is a must-read! This book is poignant, realistic, with a small hint of science fiction that is perfect for the non-sci-fi fan. It’s also a quick read that will keep you captivated until the last moment. After all, is the Earth going to stop rotating completely? What will happen to all of the people living on Earth?
If Earth began to slow its rotation, and you thought the world might come to an end, how would you spend your last few days?
Nice review! I just read The Age of Miracles last week after waiting weeks to get it from the library, and I really loved it. (And it’s such a quick read that I made my mom read it before I returned it to the library!) My own review will be up later this week 🙂

Good I can’t wait to hear your thoughts (besides that I know you loved it, too)! I actually came across a few blogs just today where the reviewers DIDN’T like the book, which was such a surprise to me!

It’s certainly a book that makes you think – and get a little bit scared. Imagine those endless days, and nights – eeep!

Those are the best books to me, the ones that could possibly occur, even if it might be a little far fetched. They scare the crap out of me, in a good way! Our Earth could possibly slow it’s rotation, which could have disastrous results. Scary, but super intriguing at the same time!

Thanks for sharing that trailer Rebecca, I hadn’t seen it before. I really, really liked The Age of Miracles. Imagine coming of age in a world so screwed up..yikes.

I know, that would be so scary! It would be sad to be so young during such a time of apprehension, especially for those kids who won’t be able to remember the past and what Earth was like.
The trailer was on the author’s website, and when I saw it, I thought it was necessary to share with everyone! 🙂

It’s on my list (even though it will probably take me forever to get to).

Thanks for commenting! That would be a great way to spend the last time you have on Earth. Probably with family and loved ones. This definitely is a book that is worth checking out, one of the ones I have enjoyed most in a while.

You might actually want to check out the book! They do have it in audiobook, since I know that’s more of your thing. Although I read an audiobook review, and the girl didn’t seem to like the narrator or the book very much, so I don’t know if something was lost from book to audio or if it was just the reviewer not enjoying it.

I totally agree that it is good sci-fi for the non-sci-fi fan. It sets up the world, but relationships drive the plot more than anything else

I agree. Both of those aspects made the book amazing.

Here I am again!
Even though I liked, there were things that disappointed me. For example, I read it very quicky, because it makes you read and read, but I think that, in general, nothing happens at all.
Anyway, it’s a plausive story involved in an original background. I liked the fact that the end of the planet is not the typical meteorite or nuclear explosion.

You know, another blogger said the same thing! That the book was a quick read, but that she didn’t feel like there was much of anything going on in general.
Personally, I like that everyone can disagree amicably! 🙂

Yes, that’s the good thing about sharing our point of view!
PD: finally I joined in the Advent with Atwood event: I got the ebook in English and I’ll take the Spanish one from the public library, in case I wouldn’t understand a word!! 😉 I’m well prepared!!

Oh my goodness! A couple of months ago this book was part of an email book club I belong to through my library. I was only able to read 5 chapters of it, b/c they just give you a little taste of this book. I loved it! But my library didn’t even have it yet, so I couldn’t check it out at the time. I forgot all about it! I am definitely going to check again for it!!!

You should! I loved it! I have read some more moderate and negative reviews, but I thought some of their points were kind of not valid. I love when people disagree with me, don’t get me wrong, but one of the negative comments was about a bullying episode and how nothing came of that. Well, as a former elementary school teacher, that’s pretty realistic for a kid to be bullied and never tell any adult about it.
But in general, the bullying parts were small, and it was more about the girl growing up while disaster looms with the world itself.

Ok, I have no idea why I seem to have 2 different profile names on here, but I am Brandy who has commented on several other posts recently. 🙂
Anyway, I will definitely be revisiting this book! Like I said, I only got to read the first 5 chapters!

I figured if my picture showed up, it would be pretty self-explanatory. 🙂 But the only thing I can figure is that maybe at some point in time I had already created a profile so I could leave comments on blogs and when I just recently started my own blog, instead of just recognizing the profile I already had, it created a new one. Oh well!
