Okay, so… I have not been left this uncomfortable by a book for a long, long time. I finished it weeks ago, and I still feel icky whenever I think about it. That is the mark of a good book.
I know (or knew once) the feeling of having to stay in a relationship out of fear…BUT I KNEW I WOULD GET OUT EVENTUALLY. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have to stay with someone because I might be murdered/framed/whateverthehell if I left (or I CAN imagine it, and that’s what makes me feel so icky).
I mean, Nick DOES have the option to leave–he chooses to stay and raise their kid (holy sh*t, that poor kid), but if he LEAVES, he has no idea what will happen to him.
Amy is scary/crazy/smart. Whoa.

Heather, even though I don’t have a connection like you do to the book, it’s still crazy and scary to think of! I like that it’s a reversed situation, though, with Amy being the dominate, scary one as opposed to Nick.
Nick is just also so messed up from Amy’s manipulation that he stays! Crazy! But I loooooooove how messed up that is because it’s rare in literature to be so completely blown away by an ending!

Wow. Wow. Wow. Some people have told me they can’t stand the ending, but I loved the ending. It’s so f’ed up, so un-Hollywood-like. I love it.
Except, I do not love how they are going to have a child. That part makes me upset, since bringing a child into their mess is just another way to create an Amy. So I think that should have been left out. Blech.
The entire book had me on the edge of my seat, and honestly, it was amazing. I understand why people wouldn’t like the ending, but I really love how the book ended. Wow, Gillian Flynn. You totally threw me for a loop and left me speechless (which is probably a first).

Overall really liked the book even though I had mixed thoughts about the ending. I did love that the book didn’t have a predictable ending- I never would have guessed that she’d trap him with a pregnancy. I guess I didn’t think about it cuz I didn’t think he would be dumb enough to sleep with her again. Thankfully he wasn’t but who knew she would trap him by saving sperm- I mean she had to have done that a long time ago before any of the book stuff even happened. Talk about having a back up plan. It just shows how untrusting, manipulative and crazy smart she is. Meanwhile I am angry that they are having a child though- that poor kid! How does Nick think he can survive in that house and raise a child without the kid being completely messed-up?! Look at who his parents will be!

Ok I have to say I agree 100% with everything you just said, so I have nothing else to comment on! 🙂 Nick’s an idiot to raise that kid with her. That’s going to be the most screwed-up kid ever!

You have to! It’s amazing! Talk about twists and turns. Heather from Between the Covers said that her other books were good, but that Gone Girl was her favorite because it’s stayed in her head for so long. I haven’t read anything else by Gillian Flynn yet, but I want to!

This book was so unsettling. I loved the twists & turns it took. I am such a naive reader that I believed the whole first section and was ready to convict Nick. The only thing that held me back was the thought of a plot twist. I never imagined such a twisted plot. Kudos to Gillian Flynn for writing such a creative book! While I think Amy is crazy smart, what does that say about the author?
Now for the ending, I’m still unsure. My first thought was that Amy harmed or killed the baby since she didn’t like how Nick answered her question. I don’t know what she would do because Amy is so vindictive and manipulative. She can’t possible let Nick get away with his comment, yet I don’t have a clue as to her response. My mind doesn’t work that way. All I know is that there is no good outcome to this family unit. I would love to see a follow up of this family 20 year later from the kid’s perspective.

Killed the baby? That’s an interesting thought because Amy is super vindictive, and she was mad at Nick’s comment. But I thought of it as the punishment in general was that Nick must stay with Amy and be fake. Both are punishments, but if she harmed herself and/or the baby, then that’s of course I more severe consequence. But knowing Amy, I wouldn’t put it past her!

I LOVED this book. The ending was insane. I never expected that. I didn’t think too much about Nick’s comment at the end and how Amy l said, “I wish he never said that.”, but I think you could absolutely be right about this!! I could see her letting the kid grow up to six years old or something and doing a murder/suicide and framing Nick for it……again. What an insane household. Weeks later and I’m still talking about this book. It is definitely one of my favorite books, and Gillian Flynn is brilliant. I can’t wait to read the two others!!

Just a followup to this comment, Stephanie visited this past week and even though we’ve been long done with reading the book and have discussed it here on the blog, we spent a chunk of time talking about Gone Girl. Seriously a book that will stick with you!

I don’t think I hated the ending? I was ANGRY when I read the ending but hey, that’s what a good book does right? Makes you feel something. That poor child…good grief.
