The Prisoner of Heaven is the third book in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.

Carlos Ruiz Zafon hooked me with The Shadow of the Wind (Book 1), left me desiring a little more with The Angel’s Game (Book 2), but tied it all together fabulously with The Prisoner of Heaven (Book 3).

The author says that the books can be read in any order, and when you change the order, you change the way you experience the story.  This seems to be true, however, I loved reading the books in the order they came out, where The Shadow of the Wind and The Angel’s Game were somewhat related, but I wasn’t sure how until The Prisoner of Heaven came along and basically slapped me in the face with its awesomeness.

The Prisoner of Heaven may have been my favorite of the three books.  I could not put it down, reading all 300 pages in less than a day.

Daniel Sempere is happily married and running the family bookstore with his father and best friend Fermín Romero de Torres.  Fermín will soon be married, but something is in the way.  When Fermín opens up to Daniel about what really has occurred in his past, secrets are revealed, questions are answered, and more questions arise.

The Prisoner of Heaven was a phenomenal read that sucked me in and kept me turning the pages without wanting to put the book down.  Carlos Ruiz Zafon did a great job tying up loose ends while still leaving the book open at the end for another in the series (which I would read in a heartbeat if you are writing it!).  And of course, Daniel visits the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, which is one of my favorite fictional places in the entire world.

I highly recommend that you read all three books in this series, but I have to say, I think this book was the best of all three so far!

  1. Love your review, love CRZ and I love the Cemetery of Forgotten books series! I really like book 1 and 3 the best, but I want to read The Prisoner of Heaven again because I read the first 2 twice. I know I liked it alot (because Fermin and Daniel is back) but I can’t remember whether I liked it better than book 1. I am with you on The Cemetery of Forgotten Books,being your favorite fictional places 🙂

    I also hope he writes a fourth book!

  3. Unfortunately, I read these books too far apart from each other and it took me awhile to put it all together when I read the 3rd. I loved the third book-glad you really enjoyed it!

    • Well I did read the 1st a while ago, but 2 & 3 I read very close together.

      Mel (The Book Musings) told me about a short story he wrote that is free for US Kindle users called Rose of Fire. To be honest, I hated it. It was nothing like the 3 books he had and it was really disappointing. Did you know about it?

    I feel the same way about Tana French’s books; you can definitely read them out of order, but they’re better if you read them in order.

I’m going to have to look for these just because of your mentions of the cemetery, bad case of “what is this thing she’s talking about?” happening here 🙂 I like the idea of reading a series out of order not being a detriment, having a good reason for it. I’ve not read a series out of order before, unless Narnia counts (because there are a few “orders”). I think I’d be worried about misunderstanding things.

    • I agree that the idea of reading a series in an order that would be different than what the author wrote might be confusing, but it depends. In this case, since the stories connect but they are independent, you can read them out of order. But I still like the idea of reading the book in the order that the author writes.

  9. We see you loved the books!!!
    As I told you, I only have read The shadow of the wind and I liked it very much, but it was several years ago, so I’m thinking about reading it again and also the rest of the trilogy, that would be great for this summer.
    And I also want to go to Barcelona!!! 😀

    • Good idea to reread and finish the series. I’m telling you, The Prisoner of Heaven was amazing. I didn’t want to put it down at all. And when you’re in Barcelona, let me know if you stumble upon the Cemetery of Forgotten Books.
