The Happiness Handbook by Jenn Flaa

I received this book from Virtual Author Book Tours in exchange for a fair and honest review.

The Happiness Handbook by Jenn Flaa is a guided workbook to help you figure out what makes you happy so that you can clearly communicate that to those that you love.

I would say this book is more for people who are dating or new in a relationship than for someone who is happy in one.  Although, as someone who is happily married, I still found great value in the book.  In fact, I completed most of the exercises and highlighted, circled, underlined on many of the pages.

Thanks to The Happiness Handbook, my husband and I take a little time each night to play “the best part of the day” game.  The game is easy.  Take away all distractions and ask each other, “What was the best part of your day?”  It’s amazing how such a little question and a little bit of time can make you feel close to each other.

I also decided I want to try some meditation techniques that were mentioned in the book (which I haven’t tried yet but hope it will make me calmer and happier in general).

  1. I do a variation on the best part of the day game with my kids 🙂 We each pick the best and worst part of our days. It usually leads to some good conversations…and that’s a great thing to have with children. And definitely with a spouse!

    • Oh good idea! I like sharing the worst, too, because not only does the conversation last a little longer but then you can discuss why something is negative and how (if you can) help fix it.

  3. I often wonder how, in this digital age where everyone is connected, how many REAL connections do we make each day? The best part of the game sounds like a great way to connect face-to-face, person-to-person in a meaningful way.

  4. Thanks Rebecca for the nice review and for sharing it with your peeps! I’m so glad you’re having fun with “the best part of the day game”! Sometimes it’s hard to pick just one best part though!!

    • It can be tough, but it works really well for us! Even if we have a limited time, we can play quickly, and when we have more time, we can take 10-20 minutes just chatting. It’s a really nice addition to our evening!!!

Thank you for the great tip and the fabulous ideas! And thanks for stopping by!

  6. I see you enjoyed the book and it has good tips. I also received the email, but I was not sure if it was for me, what a shame.
About meditation, my father talks a lot about it; he has a lot of books of meditation, but I have never tried. Let us know if you finally decide to try, I’m curious 😀

  7. I like that, that even if you’re not in the ‘target’ audience, per se, there is still enough to get out of the book. What you’ve said about the best part of your day discussion matches, and improves, on the idea of asking what good things happened instead of “what happened today”.

    • I think it’s important to look for the value in every book or experience, even if it ends up that you’re not the target audience. There’s probably still something that’s valuable, and in this book, there was enough value where I felt it was worthwhile! And honestly, the little “game” is a great way to spend some time with my husband.
