Mainstream Psychological Thriller: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn – Gone Girl is full of twists and turns, with a controversial ending that is either loved (like by me!) or hated.

Dark Thriller: Dark Places by Gillian Flynn – Flynn’s 2nd book is dark and creepy and amazing! All about a girl who was a child when her family was murdered. . . by her brother. But Libby’s not a normal child – she’s kind of a biotch.

Germy Thriller: The Hot Zone by Richard Preston – Seriously, I will never look at monkeys the same way again! This book tells the story of the ebola virus. . . and when it infected a wealthy suburb of DC in the 1990s (which is like 10 min from where I currently live!!! AAAAHHH!).

Thankful-for-a-good-mom Thriller: Mother, Mother by Koren Zailckas – Dysfunctional family and psychological treachery? Yes, please!

Apocalypse Thriller: WWZ by Max Brooks – Zombie apocalypse told in almost a documentary format, giving the story such a realistic approach that I had to remind myself that this didn’t happen.
Cult Thriller: Amity & Sorrow by Peggy Riley – Disturbing tale about life after a sexually deviant cult. Plus almost anything by the amazing Stephen King!

Just had to watch your review again – not sure if I want to read Frankenstein, but why not? Maybe I will pick up a scary book to read tonight. It’s going to be a rainy weekend, so I plan on staying in and read 🙂 Thanks for the suggestions!

Awesome list! I loved the Flynns, and The Giver, and WWZ… and I borrowed a copy of The Hot Zone from my aunt & uncle this summer but haven’t gotten to it yet… !!

Oh my gosh, The Hot Zone was sooooo good but it’ll scare you off of monkeys for the rest of your life. My husband and I are temporarily living close to where the ebola outbreak was in the 1990s, and when he’s like oh, we could live in Reston, I was like NOOO THAT’S WHERE EBOLA WAS!!! 😀

I would add The passage to the list, a book that I’m re-reading at the moment! (The twelve has just been published last week in Spanish and I wanted to read the first again in order to remember the characters and so on).
Fortunately (for me) these apocalyptic things only happen in the States 😛

I had not heard of the World War Z book when I went to see the movie (which left me unimpressed) but later read about it and that is was so much better than the movie (aren’t the books always better?). It is on my list of books I want to read now. I’ll have to ask my son about your young adult suggestions. I think he needs something new to read.

I didn’t see the movie for WWZ and I won’t. I can’t imagine how the book and movie can be the same. The book is written in such a fabulous faux-documentary style that it could only be accurately represented in a faux-documentary movie.

I just finished the audiobook of World War Z and I thought it was great, especially as a a full cast audiobook. Very cool! I also liked that it focused so much on politics and the details of fighting zombies, because so many zombie books ignore those parts of the story.

YES!!!! It actually would be a fab book on audio, if done well, so I’m glad it was. It was the most realistic type of non-realistic book I have ever read. I loved how “real” it felt, how genuine.

Shark Thriller – then you’d list a book about how sharks are being killed and eaten and stuff
